Mari Saito
Certified Trainer since 2024
I am a specialist in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) based on embodiment, dedicating many years to cultivating mindfulness-based NVC practitioners. Additionally, I am a contemporary recitation artist, conveying myself through sound, resonance, and embodiment while reciting texts. My mission combines art expression and NVC to strive for a global peace revolution free from domination.
My slogan, "Make NVC the universal OS of humanity," aims to promote awareness of embodiment, awaken presence, and increase individuals living joyfully around me, believing that eventually, the world will embody NVC even without knowing it. For NVC to become the "universal operating system of humanity," it must be achievable for all. Therefore, I focused on the inherent functions in humanity, namely, breath, homeostasis, and ultimately, a simplified perception of the human body (static or dynamic). I integrated these into my original NVC training method, ‘NVC Foundation Building.’
My NVC journey began in 2007, contributing to the development of the Japanese NVC community as one of its longstanding members. Engaging in the organization of the first (2014) and second (2017) IITs in Japan, I worked on projects like the Empathy Trumps (Feeling & Needs cards) and the Japanese version of NVC Dance Floor cards. In 2014, I founded NVC Japan Network, evolving it into a hub for NVC information in Japan (https://nvc-japan.net/).
My childhood dream of working for world peace led me to study political science at university. However, disillusioned by the perceived lack of global desire for peace, I explored various life stages, eventually becoming a performance artist in contemporary recitation. My interest in NVC stemmed from the struggles of artists facing external judgments, inspiring me to believe in NVC as a crucial key to world peace.
Through the practice of the truth that "peace starts within," I discovered the physical training method for contemporary recitation in Chinese martial arts (Han Shi Yi Quan). Experiencing Vipassana meditation, I relearned the meanings of "being present" and "staying," leading to breakthroughs, non-dualistic sensations, and overwhelming gratitude.
Integrating these experiences, I developed the NVC training method "NVC Foundation Building" and offer various original NVC learning programs. Taking the first step toward my childhood dream of world peace, I collaborate with Carmen Maki, a renowned Japanese singer, and Kenji Isesaki, a leading figure in international conflict resolution and trumpeter, forming the unit "Anarchist Brigade" to perform live shows themed around "resisting war." Despite differing methods, our shared commitment to nonviolence influences Japan significantly, and as a certified trainer, I continue to advocate for peace through nonviolence in my audio art of recitation.
